Surge Protection for solar PV systems - DC Surge Protection for Solar Panels

DC surge protection devices (SPDs) are installed between the solar panels and the solar inverter to protect both the solar inverter and the downstream electrical equipment from transient overvoltages of an atmospheric origin impacting the electrical system via the DC side of the system / the solar panels.

DC Surge protectors are in compliance with the recently updated 18th edition amendment 2 of BS7671.

DC Solar Surge Protector/Surge Arrester

Identifying the Installation Area:

DC surge protection devices (SPDs) are installed near to the solar PV inverter. In the event of transient overvoltages, the surge protector will either block excess voltage or bond/short the circuit to earth to avoid the overvoltage damaging the solar inverter and other downstream electrical equipment. To help us prepare a quotation, please email us a picture or two of the solar inverter and any other equipment such as isolators that have been installed nearby.

We supply and install DC Surge Protectors (SPDs) in two form factors:

  • Single MPPT: - 1 Circuit, 2 Cables (1 positive, 1 negative)
  • Dual MPPT: - 2 Circuits, 4 Cables (2 positive, 2 negative)

Quotation Once we understand the installation area and which DC surge protection device (SPD) to use for the installation, we will send you a quotation and let you know the earliest date from which the work can be booked in.

Book Installation: Engineers can usually be scheduled to start within 14 days, their names, phone number and the time of their visit will be known to you in advance.

Installation and Commissioning: The installation and commissioning of DC Surge Protection Devices includes DC circuit testing and is usually completed within 2 hours.

Finishing: When the work is complete we will remove and dispose of any rubbish or packaging, recycling as much as we can.

Mains/Grid Isolation and Surge Protection

Mains/AC Surge Protection Solar PV Systems

A whole house surge protector is installed to provide protection from transient overvoltages originating from the mains/grid. A whole house surge protector is installed directly inline and as close as possible to the incoming mains/grid supply meter, this allows for surge protection for all circuits and equipment including solar inverters, routers, stereos and other sensitive electrical equipment within the network. The addition of a 100Amp lockable isolator also allows for safe and convenient isolation of all electrical equipment within the network including consumer units, solar inverters, battery storage units and EV chargers from the mains/grid in one place.

Surge protectors are in compliance with the recently updated 18th edition amendment 2 of BS7671.

Surge Protection for UK Solar PV Systems

Recent changes to the BS7671 UK Wiring Regulations 18th Edition in the form of amendment 2 have introduced requirements and considerations for surge protection on both the AC and DC side of a solar PV System. In this article we take a look at surge protection, particularly in the context of the updated UK wiring regulations and how surge protection could best be incorporated into new and existing solar PV systems installed in the UK

What Our Customers Say:

"In Balance contacted us promptly after we made an enquiry, Glen telephoned and arranged to visit our property to identify the fault, he arrived the following day! Brilliant as when the system is down it isn't earning us money. We decided to have a new inverter installed as our original one was 9 years old. Glen ordered the unit which was delivered to our property he then arrange to fit the unit the following day. He really could not have done it any quicker so thank you for that. Good job done for reasonable money. Highly recommended." - Geoff Thomas, Abingdon
